Developing and testing an integrated patient mHealth and provider dashboard application system for type 2 diabetes management among Medicaid-enrolled pregnant individuals based on a user-centered approach: mixed-methods study.
The objective of this study was to develop user specifications for a tailored and integrated technology, patient application (mHealth) and provider dashboard, that provides a complete view of Medicaid-enrolled patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) during pregnancy and to develop prototypes based on users’ needs. Participating patients and providers stated a core set of expectations for the mHealth and dashboard applications. Participants then provided feedback to improve these applications. The authors concluded that digital health tools could transform health care among Medicaid-enrolled patients with T2D during pregnancy, with the goal of managing their blood glucose levels. Refining the stated needs and preferences of patients and providers to develop applications holds potential for tackling complicated health care issues.

"It made me feel like things are starting to change in society:" a qualitative study to foster positive patient experiences during phone-based social needs interventions.
Investigators conducted a pragmatic qualitative study with patients who had participated in a health-related social needs (HRSN) intervention. They found that patients were likely to have initial skepticism or reservations about the intervention; they identified 4 positive intervention components regarding patient experience; and they found that patients could be left with feelings of appreciation or hope, regardless of whether they connected with HRSN resources.

Asynchronous telepsychiatry interviewer training recommendations: a model for interdisciplinary, integrated behavioral health care.
Asynchronous telepsychiatry (ATP) is an integrative model of behavioral health service delivery that is applicable in a variety of settings and populations, particularly consultation in primary care. This article outlined the development of a training model for ATP clinician skills. The training needs for ATP clinicians were assessed on a limited convenience sample of experts and clinicians. The authors suggested that more rigorous studies of training for ATP and other technology-focused, behavioral health services are needed.

Patient and provider perspectives of a new prenatal care model introduced in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.
The authors evaluated institutional-level adoption and patient and provider experiences with a coronavirus disease 2019 prenatal care model. They found that reduced visit schedules and virtual visits were rapidly integrated into real-world care, with positive experiences for many patients and providers. They recommended future research to understand the health outcomes and care experience associated with alternative approaches to prenatal care delivery across more diverse patient populations outside of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic to inform broader health policy decisions.

Prenatal care redesign: creating flexible maternity care models through virtual care.
Each year, over 98% of the almost 4 million pregnant patients in the United States receive prenatal care-a crucial preventive service to improve outcomes for moms and babies. In this paper, the authors outline their experience rapidly transitioning prenatal care to a new model with 4 in-person visits, 1 ultrasound visit, and 4 virtual visits (the 4-1-4 prenatal plan). They then explore how lessons from this implementation can inform patient-centered prenatal care redesign during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Primary care clinic nurse activities with a telehealth monitoring system.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in the types of nursing activities and communication processes reported in a primary care clinic between patients using a home-based monitoring system to electronically communicate self-monitored blood glucose and blood pressure values and those assuming usual care. Significant differences were identified for the direct care nursing activities of providing lifestyle and health education, medication adjustments, and patient follow-up, providing evidence of greater nursing activity reported in a primary care clinic in patients who utilized a home-based monitoring system.

The increasing value of eHealth in the delivery of patient-centred cancer care.
This paper is an appraisal of peer literature over the past 10 years on patient-centered eHealth to improve cancer care delivery. Uses of eHealth include the addressal of symptom management, health-related quality of life, and other patient-reported outcomes across cancer care. Challenges of, and opportunities for accessibility, scalability, and implementation of these technologies is also discussed.

eHealth and mHealth interventions in pediatric cancer: a systematic review of interventions across the cancer continuum.
The primary objectives of this study were to (a) identify current published research in electronic health (eHealth) and mobile health (mHealth) interventions for youth undergoing cancer treatment and child, adolescent, and young adult survivors of childhood cancer and (b) critically appraise the current scientific evidence on their effectiveness and efficacy. As an exploratory aim, the investigators identified pediatric cancer patients' and survivors' perceptions, attitudes, and concerns related to eHealth and mHealth interventions.

mHealth interventions for disadvantaged and vulnerable people with type 2 diabetes.
The authors evaluate the impact of diabetes self-management interventions delivered via mobile device and/or Internet on glycemic control of disadvantaged/vulnerable adults with type 2 diabetes. They found evidence suggesting that digital interventions can improve diabetes control, healthcare utilization, and healthcare costs. More research to substantiate these early findings is recommended; the authors suggest that many issues remain in order to optimize the impact of digital interventions on the health outcomes of disadvantaged/vulnerable persons with diabetes.

eHealth engagement as a response to negative healthcare experiences: cross-sectional survey analysis.
The goal of this study was to determine how the negative healthcare experiences of low patient centeredness and care coordination problems motivate the use of different eHealth activities, and whether more highly educated individuals are more likely than those less highly educated to use eHealth following negative experiences. Researchers used factor analysis to group 25 different eHealth activities into categories, based on the correlation between respondents' reports of their usage. Their findings indicate that individuals use a greater number of eHealth activities, especially activities independent of healthcare providers, when they experience problems with their healthcare; people with lower levels of education who have had negative healthcare experiences seem more inclined to use eHealth. The researchers recommend that, in order to maximize the potential for eHealth to meet the needs of all patients, especially those who are underserved, additional work is needed to ensure that eHealth resources are accessible to all members of the population.

Patient-centered eHealth Interventions for children, adolescents, and adults with sickle cell disease: systematic review.
In this study, researchers systematically evaluated the most recent evidence in the literature to (1) review the different types of technological tools used for self-management of sickle cell disease, (2) discover and describe what self-management activities these tools were used for, and (3) assess the efficacy of these technologies in self-management. They concluded that despite the promising feasibility and acceptability of eHealth interventions in improving self-management of sickle cell disease, the evidence overall is modest.

Asynchronous telepsychiatry: a component of stepped integrated care.
The article reports findings from a clinical trial comparing asynchronous telepsychiatry (ATP) with synchronous telepsychiatry (STP) consultations. Patients were randomly assigned to either an ATP or STP treatment group, and data on clinical outcomes, economic information, and patient satisfaction collected at intervals. The authors conclude that ATP implementation in existing integrated behavioral healthcare models might increase efficiency in mental healthcare.

Family perspectives on telemedicine for pediatric subspecialty care.
The researchers sought to understand how subspecialty telemedicine is perceived and to identify design elements with the potential to improve telemedicine uptake and impact. They found that although informants saw the potential value of using telemedicine to replace in-person subspecialty visits, they were more enthusiastic about using telemedicine to complement rather than replace in-person visits.

Building an informed consent tool starting with the patient: the patient-centered Virtual Multimedia Interactive Informed Consent (VIC).
This paper describes how the authors designed, developed, and evaluated an mHealth tool for advancing the informed consent process. Their tool enables the informed consent process to be performed on tablets (e.g., iPads) utilizing virtual coaching with text-to-speech automated translation as well as an interactive multimedia elements (e.g., graphics, video clips, animations, presentations, etc.). They present the Used-Centered Design approach they adopted to develop the tool and the results of the different methods used during the development of the tool.

Design considerations for post-acute care mHealth: patient perspectives.
The authors are developing an mHealth platform to engage patients in wound tracking to identify and manage surgical site infections (SSI) after hospital discharge. Their key design qualities include: meeting basic accessibility, usability and security needs; encouraging patient-centeredness; facilitating better, more predictable communication; and supporting personalized management by providers. In this article, they illustrated their application of these guiding design considerations and proposed a new framework for mHealth design based on illness duration and intensity.
