Comparing the performance of comorbidity indices in predicting functional status, health-related quality of life, and total health care use in older adults with back pain.
The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to determine how well the functional comorbidity index (FCI) predicted outcomes in older adults with back pain compared to Quan's modification of the Charlson comorbidity index (Quan-Charlson comorbidity index) and the Elixhauser comorbidity index. The investigators concluded that all indices performed similarly in predicting outcomes. The authors indicated that there is still a need to develop better function-based risk-adjustment models that improve prediction of functional outcomes versus standard comorbidity indices.

Associations between community well-being and hospitalisation rates: results from a cross-sectional study within six US states.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between community well-being, a positively framed, multidimensional assessment of the health and quality of life of a geographic community, and hospitalisation rates. The investigators found that community well-being was inversely associated with local hospitalisation rates. They suggest that in addition to health and quality-of-life benefits, higher community well-being may also result in fewer unnecessary hospitalisations.

Improvement in mental health following total hip arthroplasty: the role of pain and function.
This prospective study examined whether mental health improved in patients who had total hip arthroplasty (THA) due to improvement in pain and function 1 year post-surgery. Patients enrolled in a THA registry from 2010 to 2014 were included and the mental component score (MCS) was examined before and 1 year post-surgery. There was a significant improvement in mental health due to less pain and improved function.

Development and initial validation of the PROMIS(R)-Plus-HF profile measure.
This paper describes the efforts to develop and validate the PROMIS®-Plus-HF (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System®-Plus-Heart Failure) profile measure. The authors conducted 8 focus groups with 61 patients with HF and phone interviews with 10 HF clinicians. They tested the measure with a 600-patient sample. Validity was analyzed and confirmed using Pearson r and Spearman rho correlations with Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire subscores. The measure consists of 86 items across 18 domains.

A health profile and overview of healthcare experiences of Cambodian American refugees and immigrants residing in Southern California.
This study compared the health status and healthcare experiences of Cambodian American refugees and immigrants, using data were collected via questionnaires and medical records from two community clinics in Southern California. Minimal differences in self-reported health behaviors occurred between the two groups. Refugees reported lower levels of health-related quality of life overall and self-rated health, but similar or more positive healthcare experiences than the immigrants. Refugees had higher rates of diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk, in adjusted analyses. The authors conclude that there is a need for more health promotion efforts to improve health outcomes and perceived wellbeing of Cambodian American refugees and immigrants.

The diagnosis of asymptomatic disease is associated with fewer healthy days: a cross sectional analysis from the national health and nutrition examination survey.
This study measured the effect of asymptomatic disease on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The health conditions focused on were glucose intolerance, hyperlipidaemia and hypertension. A secondary analysis was done of data from the 2011-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Patients who knew about their diagnosis but did not receive treatment reported lower QoL scores than those who did not know about their disease. Conversely, those without the condition reported about the same scores as those who did not know about their disease.

Identifying county characteristics associated with resident well-being: a population based study.
The authors aimed to identify county attributes that are independently associated with a comprehensive, multi-dimensional assessment of individual well-being. They identified twelve county-level factors that were independently associated with individual well-being scores. Collectively, these twelve factors explained 91% of the variance in individual well-being scores, and they represent four conceptually distinct categories: demographic; social and economic; clinical care; and physical environment.

Benchmarking health-related quality-of-life data from a clinical setting.
This paper's objective was to construct a nationally representative health-related quality of life (HRQoL) benchmark for use with a clinical sample. The results showed that HRQoL benchmarks can be created from current public datasets, and subgroups in national samples may provide more valid benchmarks for clinical populations.

Measurement characteristics for two health-related quality of life measures in older adults: the SF-36 and the CDC Healthy Days items.
This study assessed the extent to which the SF-36 and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Healthy Days items measure the same aspects of health. It found that the CDC Healthy Days items measure similar domains as the SF-36 but appear to assess health-related quality of life without regard to limitations in functioning.

Association between time since cancer diagnosis and health-related quality of life: a population-level analysis.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the association between time since cancer diagnosis and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among cancer survivors in remission. The researchers found that most cancer survivors did not experience poorer mental health, but that survivors of prostate or cervical cancer had lower mental component summary scores after 10 years of diagnosis. They concluded that the level of HRQOL among cancer survivors depends on time since cancer diagnosis and cancer type.

Comparative effectiveness of iron and erythropoiesis-stimulating agent dosing on health-related quality of life in patients receiving hemodialysis.
The researchers examined the independent associations of bolus versus maintenance iron dosing and high versus low erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) dosing on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). They found that for individuals with low baseline hemoglobin levels, higher ESA dosing and bolus iron dosing were associated with slightly higher HRQoL scores in follow-up.

Health perceptions and symptom burden in primary care: measuring health using audio computer-assisted self-interviews.
The purpose of the study was to assess the relationships among somatic symptoms and health perception measures in data collected from the implementation of audio computer-assisted self-interviews. It found physical symptoms, notably lack of energy and pain, to be prevalent and severe in an urban safety-net general medical population. Poor health perception in the patient population was attributable largely to lack of energy and pain.

Symptom burden and performance status among community-dwelling patients with serious illness.
The researchers explored the relationship between prevalence and severity of symptoms and underlying performance status. They found distinct groupings of symptoms with high burden associated with different levels of performance status. This includes high prevalence of fatigue, anorexia, and dyspnea in patients with high performance. Patients with low performance status, however, reported more pain, depression, and constipation.

Health-related quality of life in lung cancer survivors: Latent class and latent transition analysis.
The authors determined the HRQOL classes that exist among lung cancer survivors, examined transitions among those classes over time, and compared survival outcomes of patients according to the classes present in the initial phase of care. Lung cancer survivors were characterized into 4 different classes based on HRQOL responses, and few survivors transitioned to better HRQOL classes.

The researchers sought to determine the association of an ICU stay with declines in health-related quality of life (HRQoL). prehospital.
