Pilot study of a brief provider and EMR-based intervention for overweight teens with asthma.
The authors piloted an electronic medical record-based tailored discussion guide (TDG) and a brief provider training to address weight management in overweight teens with asthma. They observed modest improvements in patient-reported asthma outcomes and health behaviors. They found strong evidence that the TDG supports provider discussion of weight and asthma to create a more patient-centered conversation from the perspective of participating teens. They recommended addressing challenges to recruitment and clinic adaptation prior to advancing to a full-scale trial.

Association between obesity and acute severity among patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation.
This study examined the association between obesity and exacerbation of asthma symptoms in hospitalized adults (age 18-54 years). This retrospective cohort study used data from 8 diverse US states from 2010-2013. Among 72,086 patients hospitalized for asthma exacerbation, 24% were considered obese. Obesity was associated with a higher use of mechanical ventilation as well as a longer hospital stay. These findings were consistent among all ages, sex, and race/ethnicity.

Bidirectional relationships between weight change and sleep apnea in a behavioral weight loss intervention.
This study examined the relationship between weight change and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in the context of behavioral weight loss intervention. A total of 114 adults who were overweight or obese participated in a 12-month behavioral weight loss intervention program from April 2012 to February 2015. Over half (58%) had OSA at the baseline. Those with OSA were found to lose less weight and were less adherent to daily calorie and activity goals. The results suggest that OSA screening should be used before attempting weight loss and also may indicate additional behavioral counseling.

Reduced risk of acute exacerbation of COPD after bariatric surgery: a self-controlled case series study.
Little is known about the impact of weight reduction on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-related outcomes in patients who are obese. This study found that the risk of an ED visit or hospitalization for acute exacerbation of COPD substantially decreased after bariatric surgery in patients who are obese. This observation suggests the effectiveness of substantial weight reduction on COPD morbidity.

Obesity and severity of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
A study was done to determine if there was an increase in severity and mortality with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients who were also obese. Researchers used data from 2012-2013 State Inpatient Databases data of seven U.S. states. 17% of COPD patients in the database were defined as obese. Obesity was shown to increase use of ventilation, increased hospital stays but not in-hospital mortality.
