Measurement of primary care providers' suicide prevention skills following didactic education.
This study’s objective was to determine if didactic training by medical residents and nurse practitioner (NP) trainees increased their skills to assess and manage patients’ suicidal ideation, intent, and behaviors. Online didactic training was provided to 127 medical resident and NP trainees followed by a standardized patient interaction conducted to assess demonstrated suicide prevention skills (i.e., assessment of risk factors, protective factors, suicidal ideation and behavior, safety planning). Participants demonstrated only about half of the possible total skills in most domains and were least competent in assessing potential risk for suicide. Residents were rated significantly higher than NPs on observed skills.

Trauma training: competencies, initiatives, and resources.
Traumatic stress is currently not a required component of the standard curricula in graduate-level education in clinical and counseling psychology. However, due to the high prevalence of trauma and its potentially deleterious physical and mental health effects in the general and clinical populations, it is imperative that psychology graduate students and practitioners understand the relevance of trauma in their clients' lives and its impact in clinical research. This paper discusses competencies, initiatives and resources related to trauma training.

A randomized controlled trial of suicide prevention training for primary care providers: a study protocol.
This paper summarizes the protocol for an ongoing study used to determine the most effective way to train primary care providers in suicide prevention. The effectiveness of training using simulation is being studies using two conditions: 1) a control group that receives online training via brief videos and; 2) the same online training plus two standardized patient (SP) interactions that can be either face-to-face, or telehealth.

Stress from uncertainty and resilience among depressed and burned out residents: a cross-sectional study.
This study examined how stress from uncertainty is related to resilience among medical residents and whether those attributes are related to depression and burnout. The investigators surveyed 86 residents in pediatric residency programs from 4 urban freestanding children’s hospitals in North America in 2015. They used the Physicians’ Reaction to Uncertainty Scale to measure stress from uncertainty, the 14-item Resilience Scale to measure uncertainty, the Harvard National Depression Scale for depression, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory for burnout. There was a response rate of 58.1%. Five residents met depression criteria, and 15 residents met the burnout criteria. Depressed and burned out residents both had higher mean levels of stress compared to residents who neither depressed nor burned out.

Enhanced "train and hope" for scalable, cost-effective professional development in youth suicide prevention.
This study examined the impact of a 6-hr continuing education training, and the effect of a post-training reminder system, on mental health practitioners' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior surrounding suicide assessment and intervention. All practitioners, involved in the study, demonstrated increase in suicide assessment knowledge and attitudes for engaging in suicide risk assessments from pre- to posttest, and gains were maintained at the 3-month follow-up. The use of e-mail reminders was not associated with any additional changes.

Maintenance of certification: how performance in practice changes improve tobacco cessation in addiction psychiatrists' practice.
This study reports on findings from a Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Performance in Practice (PIP) module designed and evaluated by addiction psychiatrists who are members of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. It found that simple change projects designed to improve clinical practice led to substantial changes in self-reported chart documentation for the selected measure.

A consensus statement on trauma mental health: the New Haven Competency Conference process and major findings.
The purpose of this article was to state the need for a comprehensive model of trauma-focused, empirically informed competencies for psychiatrists, and describe the work resulting from the New Haven Competencies consensus conference. The 60 participating experts outlined 5 broad foundational and functional competencies in the areas of trauma-focused and trauma-informed scientific knowledge, psychosocial assessment, psychosocial interventions, professionalism, and relational and systems. Eight cross-cutting competencies were voted into the resulting consensus statement.
