Shared decision-making around anal cancer screening among black bisexual and gay men in the USA.
This study focused on shared decision-making on anal cancer screening among black gay and bisexual men in the US. The researchers conducted 30 semi-structured one-on-one interviews and two focus groups in 2016-2017. Out of forty-five participants, all were black and male, with 13 identified as bisexual and 32 as gay. Barriers to screening include internalized racism, biphobia/homophobia, provider bias lead to reduced healthcare engagement and discomfort discussing sexual practices which hindered shared decision-making.

Improving shared decision making for Asian American Pacific Islander sexual and gender minorities.
This study examined the challenges Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) sexual and gender minorities (SGM) encounter with shared decision making (SDM) with their providers, especially concerning mental health. Focus groups were conducted in San Francisco and interviews were conducted in Chicago and San Francisco. The participants were surveyed about attitudes towards SGM disclosure and preferences about providers. Many participants felt that providers either ignored or overemphasized their identities. Some shared the stigma of SGM identities and effects on mental health in their own families.

The influence of financial strain on health decision-making.
This study sought to explore which unmet social needs are most influential and how these needs affect individuals’ decisions regarding medical treatment and self-management of health needs among community-dwelling low-income adults. It found that financial strain, rather than any single social need, was the most important factor in health decisionmaking among the underserved adults we studied, and may result in non-adherence to medical recommendations.

Shared decision making with vulnerable populations in the emergency department.
The authors introduce a research agenda that includes community-engaged approaches, mixed-methods studies, and cost-effectiveness analyses to address questions of shared decision making (SDM) among vulnerable groups at a disadvantage in the healthcare system, as well as changes that are needed, and how to cultivate and teach these competencies.

Patient navigators and parent use of quality data: a randomized trial.
The authors explored the effectiveness of strategies to overcome barriers in vulnerable populations. They found that an intervention to reduce barriers to using publicly reported health care quality data had a modest effect on patient choice, suggesting that factors other than performance on common publicly reported quality metrics have a stronger influence on which pediatric practices women choose.

A qualitative study of vulnerable patient views of type 2 diabetes consumer reports.
This study aims to identify whether vulnerable populations with type 2 diabetes perceive consumer reports as helpful in making decisions about diabetes care. It found that participants in 18 focus groups expressed minimal interest in currently available consumer reports. They instead listed personal referrals and interpersonal interactions among the most important factors when choosing a physician.

Development of a practical model for targeting patient decision support interventions to promote colorectal cancer screening in vulnerable populations.
The authors sought to develop a practical model for predicting probability of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening completion in a diverse safety-net population and a subsequent framework for targeting screening promotion interventions. Their model and framework may be useful for designing and delivering targeted interventions to promote CRC screening.

Stakeholder assessment of comparative effectiveness research needs for Medicaid populations.
Because children, pregnant women and people with mental illness have generally been underrepresented in research discussions, comparative effectiveness rsearch (CER) questions for these groups may be understudied. To address this problem, AHRQ commissioned a team to work with Medicaid Medical Directors and other stakeholders to identify relevant CER questions. Through an iterative process of topic identification and refinement, they developed relevant, feasible and actionable questions based on issues affecting Medicaid programs nationwide.
