Telephone-based social health screening by pharmacists in the nonadherent Medicare population.
The study examined social health needs among Medicare patients and pharmacist-led screening's impact on medication adherence and healthcare use. Using a predictive algorithm, higher-risk patients were identified. Patients accepting referrals had better statin adherence, while those declining had more hospital stays and fewer primary care visits. The findings suggest pharmacist interventions can improve medication adherence without worsening healthcare use or plan membership.

Unmet social needs and adherence to pediatric weight management interventions: Massachusetts, 2017-2019.
This study examined the effects of housing insecurity and unmet social needs on adherence to pediatric weight management intervention (PWMI) programs. The authors used data from children enrolled in a 2017-2019 comparative effectiveness trial for 2 high-intensive PWMIs in Massachusetts. Families with housing security had higher contact hours with the program than families without. Children with 3 to 4 unmet social needs (parental stress, parental depression, food insecurity, and housing insecurity) also attended less hours of the program than those without.

Characteristics of women without a postpartum checkup among PRAMS participants, 2009-2011.
The authors studied whether sociodemographic characteristics and pregnancy and delivery factors were related to the likelihood of missing a postpartum checkup. They found that, compared to women who attended a postpartum checkup, women who missed the visit were younger, unmarried, less educated, with lower income, without insurance, and smokers. Also, women with intermediate or inadequate prenatal care were more likely to miss the checkup. Additionally, women were more likely to miss this checkup if their infant was born at a residence compared to a hospital and were less likely to miss the checkup if their newborn had a one-week well visit.

Racial and ethnic disparities in medication adherence among privately insured patients in the United States.
The purpose of this study was to examine the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and racial and ethnic disparities in medication adherence for three widely prescribed therapeutic classes. The investigators concluded that racial/ethnic disparities in adherence were mitigated, but persisted after controlling for detailed socioeconomic measures. They suggest that interventions should focus more on improving medication adherence of existing users, particularly in treating asymptomatic conditions.

Social determinants of adherence to pulmonary rehabilitation for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Adherence to pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is low. Previous studies have focused on clinical predictors of PR completion. This study aimed to identify social determinants of adherence to PR. The findings showed that, relative to high adherence, low adherence is associated with limited functional capacity and current smoking, while moderate adherence is associated with socioeconomic disadvantage. The distinction highlights different pathways to suboptimal adherence and calls for tailored intervention approaches.

Association between out-of-pocket costs, race/ethnicity, and adjuvant endocrine therapy adherence among Medicare patients with breast cancer.
This study aimed to determine whether there are racial/ethnic differences in 1-year adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) and whether out-of-pocket costs explain the racial/ethnic disparities in adherence. It concluded that racial/ethnic disparities in AET adherence were largely explained by women's differences in socioeconomic status and out-of-pocket medication costs.

Racial/Ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in endocrine therapy adherence in breast cancer: a systematic review.
The authors sought to understand factors that influence endocrine therapy (ET) adherence among racial/ethnic and socioeconomic subpopulations of breast cancer patients. They found significant underuse of ET among minority and low-income women. They further noted that both race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status are associated with ET use in most settings.

Socio-demographic and geographic variations in the utilization of hormone therapy in older women with breast cancer after Medicare Part-D coverage.
The researchers assessed socio-demographic, geographic, and other variations in the receipt of hormone therapy among patients with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer as well as adherence to hormone therapy within 1-year follow-up. They found that found that increasing age was significantly associated with a decreased receipt of hormone therapy and aromatase inhibitors in all hormone receptor-positive breast cancer patients after adjusting for other factors regardless of whether chemotherapy was received.

Factors affecting medication adherence trajectories for patients with heart failure.
The researchers examined the relationship between patient characteristics and medication adherence trajectories for patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). They found that age, region, education, smoking, and race were all significantly associated with the likelihood of belonging to a particular trajectory (low, increasing, decreasing, and high adherence). Nonwhites were less likely to be in the high adherence group, and smoking was more common in the low adherence group (22 percent) than in the high group (10 percent).
