Using electronic health record data to study Latino immigrant populations in health services research.
The purpose of this study was to validate an electronic health record (EHR)-based algorithm that could serve as a safe proxy for self-reported immigration status for health services researchers. Researchers developed an EHR algorithm to classify a population of patients as likely undocumented or recent Latino immigrants and validated this algorithm by conducting semi-structured interviews of staff. They concluded that the EHR has potential for studying immigration status in health services research, although more study is needed to determine the accuracy and utility of EHRs for this purpose.

Challenges with quality of race and ethnicity data in observational databases.
This study assessed the quality of race and ethnicity information in observational health databases as well as electronic health records (EHRs) and to propose patient self-recording as a way to improve accuracy. Data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) and Optum Labs, and from a single New York City healthcare system’s EHR was compared. Among 160 million patients in the HCUP database, no race or ethnicity data was recorded for 25% of the records. Among the 2.4 million patients in the New York City HER, race or ethnicity was unknown for 57%. However, when patients were allowed to directly record their race and ethnicity, percentages rose to 86%.

Persistent regional and racial disparities in nondirected living kidney donation.
Nondirected living donors (NDLDs) are an important and growing source of kidneys to help reduce the organ shortage. The authors of this study hypothesized that the initial geographic clustering and racial disparities may have improved due to an increase in NDLDs. The authors found that despite the increased number of NDLDs, racial disparities have worsened and the center-level distribution of NDLD transplants has narrowed in recent years.

Prenatal attitudes toward vaginal delivery and actual delivery mode: variation by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status.
This study examined whether women's prenatal attitudes toward vaginal delivery differed by race/ethnicity or socioeconomic status, and whether attitudes were differently related to delivery mode depending on race/ethnicity or socioeconomic status. The study concluded that there are racial/ethnic differences in chances of cesarean delivery, and these differences are not explained by birth attitudes. Findings also suggested that white and high-socioeconomic status women may be more able to realize their preferences in childbirth.

Self-determination in health research: an Alaska native example of tribal ownership and research regulation.
Southcentral Foundation (SCF), an Alaska Native-owned and operated health care organization, is transforming the relationship between researchers and the tribal community by making trust and accountability required features of health research in Alaska Native (AN) and American Indian (AI) communities. This review evaluates research through the lens of tribal principles, practices, and priorities. The SCF example provides a framework for other tribes and organizations seeking to reshape the future of health research in AN/AI communities.

Acceptability of rapid HIV testing among Latinos in Washington Heights, New York City, New York, USA.
In the United States, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has a disproportionately large impact on Latino Americans. Seventy-five percent of those surveyed accepted rapid HIV testing when offered. More religious participants were less likely than less religious participants to undergo testing. Participants tested for HIV within the past year were less likely than those who had not been tested within the past year to agree to undergo testing.

Racial and ethnic residential segregation and access to health care in rural areas.
This study examined the relationship between racial/ethnic residential segregation and access to health care in rural areas. In rural areas, segregation contributed to worse access to a usual source of health care but higher reports of health care needs being met among African Americans and Hispanics.

Experiences of Latinos with limited English proficiency with patient registration systems and their interactions with clinic front office staff: an exploratory study to inform community-based translational research in North Carolina.
This study explored Latino patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) experiences with, and expectations for, interactions with patient registration systems and front office staff. It found that Latino patients in North Carolina experienced health services barriers unique to their LEP background. Participants identified ways in which the lack of cultural and linguistic competence of front office staff negatively affect their experiences seeking health services.

Improving hospital reporting of patient race and ethnicity--approaches to data auditing.
This study investigated new metrics to improve the reporting of patient race and ethnicity (R/E) by hospitals. It examined agreement between hospital reported R/E versus self-report among mothers delivering babies and a cancer cohort in California. It concluded that comparison between reported R/E and R/E estimates using zip code level data may be a reasonable first approach to evaluate and track hospital R/E reporting.

The role of religious leaders in health promotion for older Mexicans with diabetes.
This study explored the views of ten male Mexican religious leaders about their understanding of their role in diabetes health promotion. The author found that the major themes from the qualitative interviews emphasized the importance of open communication between church leaders and their parishioners, the role of the church in diabetes programs, and the unique position of religious institutions as a link between physical and spiritual aspects of health.
