Associations between gestational weight gain, gestational diabetes, and childhood obesity incidence.
Excessive maternal gestational weight gain (GWG) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have been linked to childhood obesity. This cohort study explored the association between maternal weight gain during pregnancy, GDM, and early childhood obesity. Findings revealed that excessive weight gain during the second and third trimesters increased the risk of childhood obesity by age 6. However, GDM was associated with a lower risk. No significant interaction between GWG and GDM was observed.

Impact of BMI on prevalence of dense breasts by race and ethnicity.
Researchers evaluated differences in body mass index (BMI) in relation to differences in dense breasts prevalence by race/ethnicity. Their results indicated that dense breasts were most prevalent among Asian women followed by non-Hispanic White, Hispanic, and Black women. Clinically important differences in breast density prevalence are present across racial/ethnic groups after accounting for age, menopausal status, and BMI. IMPACT: If breast density is the sole criterion used to notify women of dense breasts and discuss supplemental screening it may result in implementing inequitable screening strategies across racial/ethnic groups.

Elucidating the role of overweight and obesity in racial and ethnic disparities in cesarean delivery risk.
This study’s goal was to quantify the extent to which overweight and obesity explain cesarean delivery rates among women of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. Administrative records were used from New York City for 216,481 singleton, nulliparous births from 2008 to 2013. Risk ratios, risk differences, and population attributable fractions for associations between body mass index and cesarean, stratified by race and ethnicity was calculated. Black and Hispanic women had the highest cesarean rates attributable to obesity and overweight (17.4% and 14.6%) respectively.

Preventing cesarean birth in women with obesity: influence of unit-level midwifery presence on use of cesarean among women in the Consortium on Safe Labor data set.
The primary goal of this study was to examine associations between midwifery unit-level presence and unplanned cesarean birth in women with different body mass index (BMI) ranges. Data from the Consortium on Safe Labor was used to analyze information on low-risk, healthy women who labored and gave birth in medical centers with or without the unit-level presence of midwives. Results indicate that the odds of unplanned cesarean birth among women who gave birth in centers with midwives were 16% lower than the odds of cesarean birth among similar women who gave birth at centers without midwives. However, women whose BMI was above 35.00 kg/m at labor admission had similar odds of cesarean birth, regardless of unit-level midwifery presence. Although integration of midwives into the caregiving environment of medical centers in the United States was associated with overall decrease in the incidence of cesarean birth, increased maternal BMI nevertheless remained positively associated with these outcomes.

Reciprocal longitudinal relations between weight/shape concern and comorbid pathology among women at very high risk for eating disorder onset.
This study examined short-term reciprocal longitudinal relations between weight/shape concern and comorbid symptoms and behaviors over the course of 24 months using cross-lagged panel models. Subjects were women 18-25 years old at high risk for onset of an eating disorder (ED), randomized to an online ED preventive intervention or waitlist control. Results supported focusing intervention on reducing weight/shape concern over reducing comorbid constructs for efficient short-term change.

Are overweight and obesity associated with increased risk of cesarean delivery in Mexico? A cross-sectional study from the National Survey of Health and Nutrition.
Researchers conducted a cross-sectional study to test the association between overweight and obesity and cesarean delivery in Mexico using data from the 2012 National Survey of Health and Nutrition (ENSANUT). They found that multiparous women with obesity are at higher risk of cesarean delivery in Mexico than multiparous women with normal body mass index. They recommend that efforts to reduce the cesarean deliveries rate take the obesity epidemic into account.

The effect of gestational weight gain on persistent increase in body mass index in adolescents: a longitudinal study.
Weight retention after pregnancy is a concern for adolescents who may be entering adulthood at unhealthy weights. In this article, the investigators studied associations between each of three measures: pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), gestational weight gain (GWG), and post-pregnancy BMI in a longitudinal follow-up of an adolescent pregnancy study cohort. They concluded that teens experienced an increase in BMI from pre-pregnancy to within 4 years after their first delivery, and this increase was related to GWG.

Early life body fatness, serum anti-mullerian hormone, and breast density in young adult women.
Researchers examined associations of early life body fatness, serum anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) concentrations, and breast density among 172 women in the Dietary Intervention Study in Children (DISC). They found no evidence that current or early life BMI influences AMH concentrations in later life. Women with higher concentrations of AMH had similar percent and absolute dense breast volume, but lower nondense volume.

Moderate and vigorous intensity exercise during pregnancy and gestational weight gain in women with gestational diabetes.
The researchers estimated the associations of exercise intensity during pregnancy with the rate of gestational weight gain (GWG) from gestational diabetes (GDM) diagnosis to delivery. Upon stratification by prepregnancy overweight/obesity, they found that significant associations were only observed for BMI greater than or equal to 25.0. There were no associations observed for moderate intensity exercise.

Racial/ethnic differences in gestational diabetes prevalence and contribution of common risk factors.
This study aimed to assess racial/ethnic differences in relative contribution of risk factors of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) among Asian subgroups (Asian Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese), Hispanics, non-Hispanic blacks, and non-Hispanic whites. It found that GDM was most prevalent among Asian Indians (19.3 percent). Relative risks were similar across all race/ethnic groups.

Body fatness during childhood and adolescence and breast density in young women: a prospective analysis.
The authors examined associations of early life body fatness with adult breast density in 182 women in the Dietary Intervention Study in Children (DISC) who were ages 25-29 at follow-up. Their results support the hypothesis that body fatness during childhood and adolescence may play an important role in premenopausal breast density, independent of current BMI, and further suggest direct or indirect influences on absolute dense breast volume.

Associations of urinary phthalates with body mass index, waist circumference and serum lipids among females: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2004.
This study investigated the association of urinary phthalate metabolites and, for the first time, the ratios of the major metabolites of the most common phthalate, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and serum lipid levels in the US female population. It found that a higher metabolic ratio of monobutyl phthalate (MBP) and mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP), reflective of slower oxidative conversion of MEHP, is associated with greater BMI and waist circumference.
