The quality of discharge summaries after acute kidney injury.
The objectives of this retrospective chart review were to determine the quality of discharge summaries in acute kidney injury (AKI) patients and to identify predictors for higher quality summaries. Researchers examined the discharge summaries for 300 randomly selected adult patients who survived a hospitalization with AKI at a tertiary care hospital in Ontario. Results showed that most discharge summaries were missing key AKI elements, even for patients with severe AKI. The researchers concluded that these gaps indicated opportunities for improving discharge summary communication following AKI.

Effect of sex on nadir hematocrit and rates of acute kidney injury in coronary artery bypass.
Researchers explored whether there a sex-related difference on nadir hematocrit and rates of acute kidney injury in coronary artery bypass. A prospective, observational study was conducted of 17,363 patients not on dialysis undergoing the procedure between 2011 and 2016 across 41 institutions from the Perfusion Measure and Outcomes registry. There was no sex-related differences found for nadir hematocrit or rates of acute kidney injury.

Association between preoperative proteinuria and postoperative acute kidney injury and readmission.
This retrospective cohort study investigated whether preoperative proteinuria is associated with surgical outcomes including postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) and readmission. The cohort used were undergoing elective inpatient surgery at 119 Veterans Affairs facilities from October 2007 to September 2014. The data collected was for a 7-month period in 2016. A higher probability of 30-day unplanned readmission was associated with preoperative proteinuria and postoperative AKI.

Association of reduced eGFR and albuminuria with serious fall injuries among older adults.
The researchers studied adverse outcomes in patients on dialysis as a result of falls. They found that among participants with CKD, cumulative 1-year mortality rates among patients with a serious fall and age-matched controls were 21.0% and 5.5%, respectively, and noted that elevated ACR but not lower eGFR was associated with serious fall injuries. They concluded that evaluation for fall risk factors and fall prevention strategies should be considered for older adults with elevated ACR.
