Association of inflammatory skin diseases with venous thromboembolism in US adults.
Patients with certain inflammatory skin diseases have multiple risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE). The objective of the study was to determine whether atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis, pemphigus, pemphigoid and/or hidradenitis was associated with VTE in US adults. Data were analyzed from the 2002-2012 Nationwide Inpatient Sample, a representative cohort of US hospitalizations.

Mining social media data to assess the risk of skin and soft tissue infections from allergen immunotherapy.
This study examined large social media databases including Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit to identify postings of rare incidents of contamination or infection from extracts for allergen immunotherapy (AIT). They used natural language processing (NLP) related to AIT from 2012 to 2016. They compared posts on adverse events for AIT compared to influenza vaccinations. The results showed that both types of posts are rare events.

Association of dermatomyositis with systemic and opportunistic infections in the United States.
This study examined whether dermatomyositis is associated with opportunistic and antibiotic-resistant infections. Data was analyzed from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample from 2002 to 2012 with a cross-sectional representative 20% sample of all hospitalizations in the US. There was an association found with serious infections in adults and children, with more associated with adults. Infections were found in the skin, bone, joints, brain, heart, lungs, and gastrointestinal system. Predictors of infections included non-white race/ethnicity, insurance status, history of long-term corticosteroid usage, Cushing’s syndrome, diabetes and cancer. This in turn caused higher odds, costs, and inpatient mortality from these infections.

Association between inflammatory skin disease and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular co-morbidities in US adults: analysis of Nationwide Inpatient Sample data.
The objective of this study was to determine whether these inflammatory skin diseases are associated with increased cardiovascular/cerebrovascular risk and/or disease. It concluded that atopic dermatitis or eczema (AD-E), pemphigus, bullous pemphigoid (BP), and hidradenitis were all associated with increased cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risk, especially at younger age.

Hydroxychloroquine dosing in immune-mediated diseases: implications for patient safety.
Evidence suggests that hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) retinal toxicity is more common than previously thought. Adhering to careful weight-based dosing can significantly reduce the risk of this adverse event and is recommended in recent guidelines. The study authors used electronic health record data from a large health system to examine HCQ dosing over a 5-year period and identify risk factors associated with higher dosage of HCQ.

Association of atopic dermatitis with smoking: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The authors examined the association between atopic dermatitis (AD) and exposure to tobacco smoke. They found that a diagnosis of AD was associated with higher odds of active smoking and exposure to passive smoke but not to maternal smoking during pregnancy, and concluded that active and passive tobacco smoke exposure are associated with increased AD prevalence.

Association between atopic dermatitis and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in US children and adults.
The researchers sought to determine if childhood and adult atopic dermatitis (AD) and AD severity are associated with ADD/ADHD and to delineate the factors contributing to such an association. It found that AD was most strongly associated with severe ADHD. AD unaccompanied by other allergic disease, was also associated with increased risk of ADD/ADHD in children.

Atopic dermatitis is associated with less physical activity in US adults.
The authors sought to use objective measures to confirm whether adults with atopic dermatitis (AD) have decreased vigorous physical activity. Their results confirmed and expanded on previous studies that found less self-reported vigorous physical activity among adults with AD.

Associations of physical activity and sedentary behavior with atopic disease in United States children.
The purpose of this study was to determine if eczema, asthma, and hay fever are associated with vigorous physical activity, television/video game usage, and sports participation and if sleep disturbance modifies such associations. The investigators concluded that children with severe atopic disease, accompanied by sleep disturbance, have higher risk of sedentary behaviors.

Association between childhood eczema and headaches: an analysis of 19 US population-based studies.
The researchers sought to determine whether childhood eczema is associated with increased headaches and whether such association is related to fatigue or sleep disturbance. After analyzing national survey data from 401,002 children and adolescents, they found that eczema is associated with increased headaches in childhood, particularly in patients with severe disease accompanied by atopy, fatigue, and sleep disturbances.

Association between atopic dermatitis and depression in US adults.
The researchers sought to determine the prevalence of depression in US adults with atopic dermatitis (AD). They concluded that approximately one in three US adults with AD reported any symptoms of depression and one in three adults with AD met diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder.
