Screening for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents.
This Putting Prevention into Practice case study is used to increase understanding of the USPSTF final recommendation on screening for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents. A case study was presented using a 12-year-old-patient with no specific concerns but had gained 18 pounds since their last wellness visit and lives a sedentary lifestyle. The patient’s family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus in maternal and paternal grandparents is described. Three multiple-choice questions are presented regarding harms and benefits of screening for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes for that patient.

Healthcare experiences of gender diverse youth across clinical settings.
The objectives of this study were to describe the current experiences of gender diverse youth in healthcare settings outside of multidisciplinary gender clinics and determine how healthcare experiences differ by gender identity and across settings, with the goal of informing interventions that can create more gender-affirming health systems.

Screening for hepatitis B virus infection in adolescents and adults.
This AHRQ-authored Putting Prevention Into Practice (PPIP) quiz is on the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) screening U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendation. Only three questions are included with the answers at the end of the quiz. The questions are about 1) When to screen for HBV; 2) Who are the high-risk groups for HBV; and 3) Which country has the highest prevalence of HBV infection.

Screening for high blood pressure in children and adolescents.
This Putting Prevention into Practice case study concerns a 10-year-old boy with obesity and a family history significant for hypertension and hyperlipidemia presenting for a well-child examination. The parents express concern about their child’s risk for hypertension and ask whether they should be monitoring his blood pressure. Three questions are presented, along with answers.

Primary care-based interventions to prevent illicit drug use in children, adolescents, and young adults.
This case study concerns a 14-year-old patient who presents for a well-child visit. The patient eats a healthy diet, is part of a local soccer league, is an overall good student, and just started high school in the fall. The patient denies trying any illicit substances but reports trying to “get high” from cough syrup. Three questions are presented, and answers provided.

Things we do for no reason: systemic corticosteroids for wheezing in preschool-aged children.
This installment of the “Things We Do For No Reason” series presents and discusses a case study concerning the administration of systemic corticosteroids in a 4-year-old child presenting with wheezing, tachypnea, and respiratory distress. The authors conclude that current evidence does not support the routine use of systemic corticosteroids for preschool-aged children admitted for mild to moderate wheezing episodes, and that the patient in the introductory case would likely receive no clinical benefit from dexamethasone treatment.

The contemporary appendectomy for acute uncomplicated appendicitis in children.
The purpose of this research was to study cases of acute, uncomplicated appendicitis in children. The researchers found that, in a population of 9,507 patients, the children have excellent clinical outcomes, although children aged 5 and under have an increased risk of negative appendectomy. Also, more than one-third of children received a computed tomography prior to the operation despite guidelines against their use.

What factors influence states' capacity to report children's health care quality measures? A multiple-case study.
The objective of this study was to describe factors that influence the ability of state Medicaid agencies to report the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) core set of children's health care quality measures . Reporting capacity was influenced by a state's Medicaid data availability, ability to link to other state data systems, past experience with quality measurement, staff time and technical expertise, and demand for the measures.

Screening for primary hypertension in children and adolescents.
This article presents a case study about a 14-year-old black adolescent who presents for a routine school physical examination. Her mother tells you that she and her husband have hypertension, and they worry about their daughter’s blood pressure. She asks you whether her child should be periodically checked for high blood pressure. The case study was coordinated with the AHRQ-administered US Preventive Services Task Force and published online on the American Academy of Family Practice website.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in pediatric patients: case report and literature review.
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy is a rare, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system caused by JC virus. Fewer than 30 cases have been reported in HIV- and non-infected children. The researchers report the case of a 15-year-old girl with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and AIDS who presented with nystagmus, dysarthria and ataxia. They also include a literature review.
