Association of Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act with insurance status, cancer stage, and timely treatment among patients with breast, colon, and lung cancer.
The effect of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion on cancer care delivery and outcomes is unknown. Patients with cancer are a high-risk group for whom treatment delays are particularly detrimental. The objective of this study was to examine the association between Medicaid expansion and changes in insurance status, stage at diagnosis, and timely treatment among patients with incident breast, colon, and non-small cell lung cancer.

Accountable care program implementation and effects on participating health care systems in Washington state: a conceptual model.
This study used key informant interviews with health care executives representing 5 large health systems contracted with the Washington State Health Care Authority to provide accountable care network services under the State Innovation Model initiative. Two rounds of semistructured interviews were conducted, and results indicated the need to present a modified conceptual model aligned better with accountable care program (ACP) implementation.

Medicaid coverage accuracy in electronic health records.
The objective of the study was to evaluate the validity of electronic health record (EHR) data for monitoring longitudinal Medicaid coverage and assess variation by patient demographics, visit types, and clinic characteristics. The researchers conducted a retrospective, observational study comparing Medicaid status agreement between Oregon community health center EHR data linked at the patient-level to Medicaid enrollment data (gold standard).

Medicaid expansion and health plan quality in Medicaid managed care.
The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of the 2014 Medicaid expansion on Medicaid managed care plan quality. The study concluded that Medicaid expansion increased enrollment in managed care plans, but it did not result in erosion of quality.

Twelve-month health care use and mortality in commercially insured young people with incident psychosis in the United States.
This study assessed 12-month mortality and patterns of outpatient and inpatient treatment among young people experiencing an incident episode of psychosis in the United States. The hugely elevated mortality observed, when compared to the general population, underscores that young people experiencing psychosis warrant intensive clinical attention-yet the researchers found low rates of pharmacotherapy and limited use of psychosocial treatment.

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act evaluation study: impact on specialty behavioral healthcare utilization and spending among enrollees with substance use disorders.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) was associated with increased behavioral health expenditures and utilization among a population with substance use disorder (SUD) diagnoses. The investigators found that MHPAEA was associated with modest increases in total, plan, and patient out-of-pocket spending and outpatient and inpatient utilization.

Medicaid's lasting impressions: population health and insurance at birth.
This article examines lasting mortality improvements associated with availability of Medicaid at time and place of birth. Being born after Medicaid was associated with between 2.03 and 3.64 fewer deaths per 100,000 person-years in childhood and between 1.35 and 3.86 fewer deaths per 100,000 person-years in the thirties. The association between Medicaid at birth and mortality was the strongest in the oldest age group (36-40) in this study.

Measuring prices in health care markets using commercial claims data.
The objective of this study was to compare methods of price measurement in health care markets. It concluded that market-level price measures reflecting broad sets of services are likely to rank markets similarly. Price indices relying on individual sentinel services may be more appropriate for examining specialty- or service-specific drivers of prices.

Policy-oriented research on improved physician incentives for higher value health care.
Policy makers (both public and private) are seeking ways to improve the value delivered within our health care system. To inform such policy changes, this paper identifies areas in which little is known about the effects of specific incentives (FFS, salary, etc.) on the two components of value: resource use and quality. Specific suggestions are offered focusing on fundamental "building block" studies.

The demand for preventive and restorative dental services.
The authors sought to examine the extent to which limited dental coverage and high out-of-pocket costs reduce dental service use by the nonelderly privately insured and uninsured. They concluded that dental coverage is an important determinant of preventive dental service use, but other nonprice factors related to consumer preferences, especially education, are equal if not stronger determinants.
