Changes in hospital-acquired conditions and mortality associated with the hospital-acquired condition reduction program.
This study evaluated changes in Hospital-Acquired Conditions (HACs) and 30-day mortality after the announcement of the Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services’ Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program (HACRP) in August 2013. The authors evaluated models to test for changes in HACs and 30-day mortality before and after the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and after the HACRP. Fee-for-service Medicare claims from 2009 to 2015 were used. The HAC rate declined after the ACA was passed and declined further after the HACRP announcement. However, 30-day mortality rates were unchanged.

The impact of antifungal prophylaxis in lung transplant recipients.
This study evaluated the effect of antifungal prophylaxis on all-cause mortality and invasive fungal infections (IFI) on lung transplant recipients. Administrative claims data was used to identify adult patients who underwent lung transplantation between 2005 and 2018. The authors identified 662 lung transplant recipients. All-cause mortality was found to be significantly lower in those receiving antifungal prophylaxis compared to those who did not. Patients receiving antifungal prophylaxis also had a lower rate of IFI, but it was not statistically significant.

Continuation of annual screening mammography and breast cancer mortality in women older than 70 years.
This study examined whether discontinuing annual mammography screening in women older than 70 years results in an increased 8-year breast cancer mortality. The researchers used data from the Medicare program and looked at over 1 million beneficiaries aged 70 to 84 who had no previous breast cancer diagnosis, and who underwent screening mammography from 2000 to 20008. The 8-year risk difference for women aged 70 to 74 years was -1.0 death per 1000 women and for women aged 75 to 84 years it was 0.07. Neither of these show substantial reductions in 8-year breast cancer mortality compared with stopping screening.

How to save 1 million lives in a year in low- and middle-income countries.
This review focuses on educational programs developed to reduce preventable deaths in newborn infants in low- and middle-income countries, including Essential Newborn Care and Helping Babies Breathe, a simplified version of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program. Innovative pragmatic large-scale trials have evaluated these programs in low-resource settings. The results of these studies and the implications for future programs designed to decrease childhood mortality are reviewed.

Maternal deaths from suicide and overdose in Colorado, 2004-2012.
This study ascertained demographic and clinical characteristics of maternal deaths from self-harm (accidental overdose or suicide) and to identify opportunities for prevention. It found that in seventeen percent (n=10) of maternal deaths there had been a known substance use disorder. Prior psychiatric diagnoses were documented in 54 percent (n=32) and prior suicide attempts in 10 percent (n=6).

Comparative effectiveness of implantable cardioverter defibrillators for primary prevention in women.
The researchers examined clinical practice data to compare survival rates among women with heart failure with or without a primary prevention implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Theyn found that among patients with heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction, a primary prevention ICD was associated with a significant survival advantage among women and among men.

Geriatric conditions in patients undergoing defibrillator implantation for prevention of sudden cardiac death: prevalence and impact on mortality.
The researchers sought to determine the prevalence of frailty and dementia among older adults receiving primary prevention implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) and to determine the impact of multimorbidity on mortality within 1 year of ICD implantation. They concluded that more than 10 percent of Medicare beneficiaries with heart failure receiving primary prevention ICDs have frailty or dementia. These patients had significantly higher 1-year mortality than those with other common chronic conditions.

Prophylactic inferior vena cava filter placement does not result in a survival benefit for trauma patients.
The researchers examined the relationship between prophylactic inferior vena cava (IVC) filter use, mortality, and venous thromboembolic events (VTE). They found that high rates of prophylactic IVC filter placement have no effect on reducing trauma patient mortality and are associated with an increase in deep venous thromboembolism (DVT) events.

Effectiveness of implantable cardioverter defibrillators for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death in subgroups a systematic review.
The purpose of this review was to examine ICD effectiveness for primary prevention of SCD across subgroups by sex, age, QRS interval, time since myocardial infarction, blood urea nitrogen level, and diabetes. It concluded that there was weak evidence showing differences for all-cause mortality in subgroups of sex, age, and QRS interval. Also, evidence was indeterminate for all-cause mortality in the other subgroups and for SCD.
