Association between the opening of retail clinics and low-acuity emergency department visits.
This study assessed whether the opening of retail clinics near emergency departments (ED) is associated with decreased ED utilization for low-acuity conditions. It concluded that with increased patient demand resulting from the expansion of health insurance coverage, retail clinics may emerge as an important care location, but to date, they have not been associated with a meaningful reduction in low-acuity ED visits.

Costs associated with ambulatory care sensitive conditions across hospital-based settings.
The objective of this study was to identify the cost differences in payments and charges for ambulatory care-sensitive conditions (ACSC) visits in three different hospital-based settings: outpatient visits, ED visits, and inpatient admissions. After adjusting for patient demographics and comorbid conditions, charges for an inpatient ACSC visit were four times higher ($11,414 vs. $2,563) when compared to an ED visit.

Exploration of an automated approach for receiving patient feedback after outpatient acute care visits.
The authors' objective was to provide post-visit feedback to physicians on patient outcomes following acute care visits. They found that many patients who do not improve as expected do not take action to further address unresolved problems. They suggested that systematic follow-up/feedback mechanisms can potentially identify and connect such patients to needed care.

The authors discussed Berner et al., elsewhere in the same issue, which explored the use of an automated interactive voice response system to reach patients after acute care visits. They suggested that providers evaluate the rigor and outcomes of follow-up practices within their own clinical settings.
