Accessing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP): perceptions of current and potential prEP users in Birmingham, Alabama.
Limited studies to date assess barriers to and facilitators of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake and utilization using a patient-centered access to care framework, among diverse socio-demographic groups, or in the U.S. Deep South, an area with disproportionate HIV burden. In this study, the investigators examine perceptions of PrEP access in qualitative interviews with 44 current and potential PrEP users in Birmingham, Alabama.

Mental health service utilization is associated with retention in care among persons living with HIV at a university-affiliated HIV clinic.
The researchers sought to determine if mental health (MH) service utilization would be associated with improved retention in care for patients with HIV and MH comorbidities. They concluded that even in the absence of documented MH comorbidities, improved retention in care was observed with increasing MH service utilization.

The influence of trust in physicians and trust in the healthcare system on linkage, retention, and adherence to HIV care.
The present study was designed to determine if trust in physicians and the healthcare system among persons newly diagnosed with HIV infection was predictive of patients' subsequent linkage, retention, and adherence to HIV care. No significant association was found between trust-in-physicians and linkage to care or adherence to antiretroviral therapy.

Impact of hepatitis coinfection on healthcare utilization among persons living with HIV.
The purpose of this study is to characterize the impact of hepatitis coinfection on utilization of primary HIV care, mental health, and inpatient services. It found no difference in primary HIV care utilization according to hepatitis serostatus. However, patients with HIV/HCV coinfection demonstrated higher rates of mental health visits than any of the other groups examined.

Hepatitis C virus testing in adults living with HIV: a need for improved screening efforts.
The authors sought to understand hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing practices in people living with HIV (PLWH) in order to improve compliance with guidelines and help identify areas for future intervention. They concluded that additional efforts to improve compliance with HCV testing guidelines are needed.
