Human-centered approaches that integrate sensor technology across the lifespan: opportunities and challenges.
Children, parents, older adults, and caregivers routinely use sensor technology as a source of health information and health monitoring. The purpose of this paper was to describe three exemplars of research that used a human-centered approach to engage participants in the development, design, and usability of interventions that integrate technology to promote health. The exemplars were based on current research studies that integrated sensor technology into pediatric, adult, and older adult populations living with a chronic health condition.

Patient ergonomics: 10-year mapping review of patient-centered human factors.
The authors performed a mapping review of 212 full-text patient ergonomics publications in two conference proceedings, 2007-2017. They found gaps deserving future research, including research with understudied populations and marginalized populations; on topics such as health promotion and transitions of care; and using longitudinal and experimental study designs. They recommended more focused reviews, new primary research, and developing a roadmap for future patient ergonomics research.

A flexible model for patient engagement: achieving quality outcomes and building a research agenda for head and neck cancer.
This article describes the work of a head and neck cancer survivors who became advisors on a multidisciplinary team of providers. The survivors provided feedback to providers on areas of improvement for clinical flow and they also have provided advice on efforts to increase public awareness. They have also been very active at cancer symposiums and other local presentations.

Does caregiver participation in decision making within child welfare agencies influence children's primary and mental health care service use?
This study uses a national sample of children involved with child welfare to compare their health service use between those children served through a participatory decision making (PDM) practice and those who did not experience it. It concluded that lower-risk families were more likely to be served through PDM which was positively associated with child use of primary health services.

Parent and teen engagement in pediatric health services research training.
The Harvard-wide Pediatric Health Services Research (HSR) Fellowship Program is a multidisciplinary program that has trained child health researchers for over 20 years. In 2013, it set out to engage patients and families in the redesign of its research training activities. The authors concluded that the benefits from including parents and teens in our program exceeded their expectations. Patients and parents of children with chronic illness came to understand how research informs the care they receive.

How the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute is engaging patients and others in shaping its research agenda.
This article describes PCORI's approach to generating topics for research and how it is being used in selection of research that PCORI will fund. It further describes challenges facing this approach, including a lack of common language and training on the part of patients and resistance on the part of researchers to questions that are not researcher generated.
