Patient-reported outcomes collected in ambulatory oncology practices: feasibility, patterns, and correlates.
The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of soliciting outcomes from adults who received chemotherapy treatment for cancer and to describe the patterns and correlates of patient-reported toxicities. Results determined that querying patients on chemotherapy treatment experiences and toxicities was feasible. Toxicity rates varied across practices, informing quality improvement. Toxicity severity and service use incidence exceed previously published trial data, particularly for pain, fatigue, and gastrointestinal issues. Open-text questions enabled exploration with newer treatment regimens.

Integrated care models and behavioral health care utilization: quasi-experimental evidence from Medicaid health homes.
This study provided the first population-level evidence on the effects of Medicaid health homes (HH) on behavioral health care service use. As of 2016, 16 states had adopted an HH for enrollees with serious mental illness and/or substance use disorder. Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the authors found that HH adoption increased service use among enrollees and enrollee self-reported health improved post-HH.

Same-day discharge is not associated with increased readmissions or complications after thyroid operations.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether same-day discharge following thyroid surgery resulted in increased rehospitalization. Data from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Targeted Thyroidectomy database was used to identify patients who underwent thyroid resections. Results showed that, in a national cohort of patients undergoing thyroid surgery, same-day discharge was not associated with greater rates of readmission or complications when compared with discharge 1 or 2 days after thyroid surgery.

Physicians' views of self-monitoring of blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes not on insulin.
This qualitative study examines to what extent and why physicians still prescribe self-monitoring of blood glucose in patients with non-insulin-treated type 2 diabetes when the evidence shows it increases cost without improving hemoglobin A1c, general well-being, or health-related quality of life.

Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy in pediatric Medicaid enrollees.
The study’s objective was to characterize outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) use and clinical outcomes for a large population of pediatric Medicaid enrollees treated with OPAT. It found that ceftriaxone and vancomycin were the most commonly prescribed antimicrobials. An emergency department visit or hospital admission occurred during 38 percent of OPAT episodes, among which 61 percent were OPAT-related.

Comparing unmet needs to optimize quality: characterizing inpatient and outpatient palliative care populations.
The researchers compared the unmet needs of palliative care patients by location of care to better characterize these populations. They found that outpatients are more burdened by pain at first palliative care encounter compared to inpatients, yet outpatients experience higher quality of life and better performance status.

Medication therapy management interventions in outpatient settings: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Medication therapy management (MTM) services (also called clinical pharmacy services) aim to reduce medication-related problems and their downstream outcomes. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of MTM interventions among outpatients with chronic illnesses. The investigators graded the evidence as insufficient for most outcomes because of inconsistency and imprecision that stemmed in part from underlying heterogeneity in populations and interventions.
