Chronic physical illness burden and suicidal ideation among Dominicans in New York City.
This study used data from a community survey of 2753 Dominican adults in New York City to investigate the association between chronic illness and suicidal ideation. The investigators concluded that the association of interest did not differ significantly between younger and older adults. They suggest that screening for SI in health care practice, particularly among Dominican men with multiple chronic health conditions, may be warranted.

Diabetes mellitus is associated with higher risk of developing decompensated cirrhosis in chronic hepatitis C patients.
This study investigated the association of diabetes with risk of decompensated cirrhosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). In a privately insured US population with CHC, the rates of decompensated cirrhosis per 1000 person-years were: 185.5 for persons with baseline cirrhosis and diabetes, 119.8 for persons with cirrhosis and no diabetes, 35.3 for persons with no cirrhosis and diabetes, and 17.1 for persons with no cirrhosis and no diabetes.

Visit-to-visit systolic blood pressure variability and microvascular complications among patients with diabetes.
This study examined the relationship between systolic blood pressure (SBP) variability and the risk of microvascular complications in a non-elderly diabetic population. Compared to individuals with the least SBP variability (Quartile 1), those with most variability (Quartile 4) had 81 percent and 19 percent higher incidence of nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, and any complication, respectively, after adjusting for mean SBP, demographic and clinical factors.

Association between diagnosed diabetes and trouble seeing, National Health Interview Survey, 2011-13.
This study used nationally representative 2011–2013 data from the United States to estimate the association between diagnosed diabetes and trouble seeing. Diagnosed diabetes was associated with approximately double the odds of self-reported trouble seeing. Older age, less education, and a history of comorbid conditions were positively correlated, while male sex, being married, and having health insurance were negatively correlated with trouble seeing.

The impact of untreated obstructive sleep apnea on cardiopulmonary complications in general and vascular surgery: a cohort study.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether preoperatively untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects postoperative outcomes. It found that compared with treated OSA, untreated OSA was independently associated with more cardiopulmonary complications (risk-adjusted rates 6.7 percent versus 4.0 percent; particularly unplanned reintubations and myocardial infarction.

Chronic hypertension in pregnancy and the risk of congenital malformations: a cohort study.
The researchers sought to examine the effect of chronic hypertension on the risk of congenital malformations in a large cohort of pregnancies in Medicaid beneficiaries. In a cohort of 878,126 pregnancies, they found that both treated and untreated maternal chronic hypertension were associated with a similar 20-30 percent increase in the risk of congenital malformations in the infant after adjusting for confounding factors as compared with normotensive controls.

Falls in people with MS--an individual data meta-analysis from studies from Australia, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States.
The objectives of this paper are to compile fall rates across a broad range of ages and disease severity and to definitively assess the extent to which multiple sclerosis (MS)-associated and demographic factors influence fall rates. It found that persons with MS are at high risk of falls and there are important associations between falls and MS-associated disability, gender and age.
