Feasibility and patient satisfaction with smoking cessation interventions for prevention of healthcare-associated infections in inpatients.
The primary aim of this pilot, randomized-controlled trial was to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a tobacco cessation intervention compared with usual care in inpatients. It found overall high levels of satisfaction with the intervention, indicating good feasibility and acceptance among patients.

When patients customize nursing home ratings, choices and rankings differ from the government's version.
Report cards currently published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) offer composite quality measures, such as the one featured on the Nursing Home Compare website. Nursing Home Compare Plus is an alternative that allows patients and their families to create their own composite scores based on their own preferences and medical needs. When comparing Nursing Home Compare Plus to Medicare's five-star ratings, we found only minimal agreement on ranking of nursing homes.

Clocks moving at different speeds: cultural variation in the satisfaction with wait time for outpatient care.
This study explored racial/ethnic differences in satisfaction with wait time of scheduled office visits by comparing electronic health record -based, patient-reported, and patient satisfaction with wait time. It found that given actual wait times, Asians perceive longer wait time and were less satisfied with wait times. Asians may have different expectations about wait time at the clinic.

Health system loyalty programs: An innovation in customer care and service.
Loyalty programs could empower patients to manage their health in new and innovative ways while enhancing the business model for health systems. The authors argue that by providing both better appreciation/customer service and high-quality technical care, loyalty programs may offer a new way to attract and retain patients within a health system.

Novel statistical approach to determine inflammatory bowel disease: patients' perspectives on shared decision making.
The aim of this study was to examine patient insights regarding shared decision making among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using novel statistical technology to analyze qualitative data. From the 355 patients surveyed, the researchers identified three unique patient clusters: satisfied, content, and dissatisfied. They concluded that patient perspectives in this study indicate an increased desire for shared decision making in determining an optimal IBD treatment plan.

Respecting patients is associated with more patient-centered communication behaviors in clinical encounters.
The researchers investigated whether respect for patients was associated with communication behaviors during HIV care encounters. They found that respect is associated with positive and patient-centered communication behaviors during encounters. They recommended that clinicians should be mindful of their respectful attitudes and work to foster positive regard for patients.

Rationale and study protocol for the Nursing Home Compare Plus (NHCPlus) randomized controlled trial: A personalized decision aid for patients transitioning from the hospital to a skilled-nursing facility.
This paper describes the design and rationale of a two-arm randomized controlled trial designed to test the effectiveness of Nursing Home Compare Plus (NHCPlus) compared to usual care only, in a sample of patients being discharged from the hospital to an SNF (N=229). Assessments were conducted within 24h prior to patient discharge and 30-days post discharge. A primary outcome to be examined was the use of NHC.

Association between clinician computer use and communication with patients in safety-net clinics.
The researchers studied associations between clinician computer use and communication with patients with diverse chronic diseases in safety-net clinics. They found that high computer use by clinicians in safety-net clinics was associated with lower patient satisfaction and observable communication differences.

Exploring group composition among young, urban women of color in prenatal care: implications for satisfaction, engagement, and group attendance.
The current investigation aimed to explore associations between prenatal care group composition with patient satisfaction, engagement, and group attendance among young, urban women of color. It found that women in groups with others more diverse in age reported greater patient engagement and, in turn, attended more group sessions.

How patient comments affect consumers' use of physician performance measures.
In order to evaluate the relationship between patient characteristics and the frequency and duration of incident steroid use, the researchers applied a 2-part hurdle model to Medicare data. Their study identified differences in predictors of frequency and duration of medication use and suggests the utility of two-part models to examine drug utilization patterns.

Less use of extreme response options by asians to standardized care scenarios may explain some racial/ethnic differences in CAHPS scores.
The researchers explored whether lower extreme response tendency ( ERT) is observed for Asians than whites in response to standardized vignettes depicting patient experiences of care and whether ERT might in part explain Asians reporting worse care than whites. They concluded that lower ERT in Asians may partially explain observations of lower observed mean CAHPS scores for Asians in real-world settings.
