Reassessing the stroke belt: using small area spatial statistics to identify clusters of high stroke mortality in the United States.
The researchers identified clusters of high stroke mortality and adjacent areas of low stroke mortality for US counties and evaluated for regional differences in county-level risk factors. They found that clusters of high stroke mortality exist beyond the 8-state stroke belt, and variation exists within the stroke belt. They recommended reconsideration of the stroke belt definition and suggested increased attention to local determinants of health underlying small area regional variability to inform targeted healthcare interventions.

Risks of developing breast and colorectal cancer in association with incomes and geographic locations in Texas: a retrospective cohort study.
This study aimed to determine whether median household income was associated with the risk of developing breast and colorectal cancer in Texas and to identify higher cancer risks by race/ethnicity and geographic areas. It demonstrated that higher income was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer and a decreased risk of colorectal cancer in Texas.

Adverse family experiences during childhood and adolescent obesity.
The researchers evaluated the association between adverse family experiences (AFEs) during childhood and adolescent obesity and determined populations at highest risk for AFEs. They found that adolescents in this national sample who were exposed to greater numbers of AFEs in childhood also had higher rates of overweight and obesity, and also that geographic variation and differential associations based on race/ethnicity identified children at greatest risk.

Understanding patient, provider, and system factors related to Medicaid readmissions.
This study was undertaken to understand the complexity of Medicaid readmission issues at the patient, provider, and system levels. It found that significant risk factors for Medicaid readmissions included financial stress, high prevalence of mental health and substance abuse disorders, medication nonadherence, and housing instability. Lacking awareness on Medicaid patients' high risk, a sufficient business case, and proven strategies for reducing readmissions were primary barriers for providers.

Maternal correlates of body mass index in American Indian/Alaska Native and white adolescents: differences between mother/son and mother/daughter pairs.
This study sough to determine the influence of maternal correlates on adolescent body mass index (BMI), and the extent to which the size and significance of these correlates vary by adolescent sex and race. Its findings suggest that maternal factors are critical in the transmission of obesogenic behaviors from one generation to the next, and their effects vary between mother/son and mother/daughter pairs, and are similar for AI/ANs and Whites.
