Identifying specific combinations of multimorbidity that contribute to health care resource utilization: an analytic approach.
The objective was to identify specific combinations of chronic conditions, functional limitations, and geriatric syndromes associated with direct medical costs and inpatient utilization. The multimorbid population is heterogeneous and there is considerable variation in how specific combinations of morbidity influence resource use. Functional limitations were more important than many chronic diseases in explaining resource use.

Utilization and predictors of expectant management among elderly men with low-and intermediate-risk localized prostate cancer in U.S. urological practice.
Researchers assessed the use and predictors of expectant management (EM) to understand its uptake in U.S. practice. In U.S. practice, the utilization of EM steadily increased in low-risk prostate cancer and remained low in the intermediate-risk group over time. While patients with advanced age or comorbidities were more likely to receive EM, its use varied substantially by geographic region.

Impact of a value-based formulary on medication utilization, health services utilization, and expenditures.
The objective of the study was to determine the impact of the value-based formulary (VBF). It found that cost-sharing informed by cost-effectiveness analysis reduced overall medication expenditures without negatively impacting medication utilization, health services utilization, or nonmedication expenditures.

Impacts of geographic distance on peritoneal dialysis utilization: refining models of treatment selection.
This study examined the relationship between distance to dialysis provider and patient selection of dialysis modality, informed by the absolute distance from a patient's home and relative distance of alternative modalities. It found a positive, nonlinear relationship between absolute distance to hemodialysis (HD) services and peritoneal dialysis (PD) use, with the magnitude of the effect increasing at greater distances.

Changes in medication use after dementia diagnosis in an observational cohort of individuals with diabetes mellitus.
The researchers assessed changes in medication use after a diagnosis of dementia in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. After adjustment, the number of chronic medications and the subset of cardiovascular medications declined after a dementia diagnosis in the overall cohort and in age-, sex-, and time-matched reference individuals, but the decline was significantly greater in the group with dementia.

Sex differences in lipid profiles and treatment utilization among young adults with acute myocardial infarction: results from the VIRGO study.
This study characterized sex differences in lipid profiles and treatment utilization among young adults with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Young women with AMI had slightly favorable lipid and lipoprotein profiles compared with men, suggesting that difference in lipid and lipoprotein may not be a major contributor to sex differences in outcomes after AMI.
