A mixed-methods evaluation of standalone personal health record use by patients with type 2 diabetes.
The purpose of this study was to compare use of a standalone personal health records (PHRs) by patients with Type 2 diabetes to usual care through assessment of self-care behaviors, and short-term impact on social cognitive outcomes and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Five themes emerged from the qualitative analysis describing participants' experiences with the PHR and identifying reasons for lack of engagement. Study findings revealed low PHR uptake and minimal impact on study outcomes, including lack of communication and information-sharing between patients and providers.

An international, mixed-methods study of the perceived intrusiveness of remote digital diabetes monitoring.
This paper describes an international online vignette-based survey to assess the relationship between remote digital monitoring (RDM) modalities for diabetes and intrusiveness in patients’ lives. The survey was conducted from February-June 2019 in 30 countries with 1010 participants. A total of 2680 vignette-assessments were completed with 52% on type 1 diabetes. Increased intrusiveness was associated with food monitoring compared with glucose- and PA-monitoring alone and permanent monitoring with real-time physician-generated feedback compared with monitoring for a week with feedback. Public-sector data handling was associated with decreased intrusiveness as compared with the private sector.

Understanding gaps between daily living and clinical settings in chronic disease management: qualitative study.
This study’s objective was to characterize gaps from the patient’s perspective between health-related activities across home-based and clinical settings in the management of chronic conditions. Patients were recruited from an anticoagulation clinic of an urban, western mountain system and primary interviews were conducted with 39 patients and 4 providers. The causes of gaps included clinician recommendations not fitting into patients’ daily routines; recommendations not fitting into a patients’ living contexts; and no information transfer across settings. Consequences of these gaps included increased cognitive and physical workload on the patient, poor patient satisfaction, and compromised adherence to the therapy plan.

Evaluation of patient willingness to adopt remote digital monitoring for diabetes management.
Investigators sought to identify the minimum effectiveness patients report they require to adopt 36 different remote digital monitoring (RDM) scenarios. Adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes living in 30 countries assessed three randomly selected scenarios from a total of 36 that described different combinations of digital monitoring tools. The investigators found that patients required greater health benefits to adopt more intrusive RDM modalities, food monitoring, and real-time feedback by a health care professional. They recommended that patient monitoring devices be designed to be minimally intrusive.

Primary care clinic nurse activities with a telehealth monitoring system.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in the types of nursing activities and communication processes reported in a primary care clinic between patients using a home-based monitoring system to electronically communicate self-monitored blood glucose and blood pressure values and those assuming usual care. Significant differences were identified for the direct care nursing activities of providing lifestyle and health education, medication adjustments, and patient follow-up, providing evidence of greater nursing activity reported in a primary care clinic in patients who utilized a home-based monitoring system.

Protocol of the randomized control trial: the WiseApp trial for improving health outcomes in PLWH (WiseApp).
This paper outlines the protocol for the WiseApp randomized control trial. The WiseApp contains real-time medication monitoring linking an electronic pill bottle and fitness tracker to the app, helping persons living with HIV (PLWH) self-manage their medication adherence and improve their overall quality of life. The primary objective of the trial is to test the effect of the WiseApp's medication adherence features on antiretroviral adherence in underserved PLWH in New York City. The real-time monitoring of the WiseApp has the potential to help providers initiate interventions to help patients resume treatment before drug resistance begins.

Mobile-enhanced peer support for African Americans with Type 2 diabetes: a randomized controlled trial.
This study compared the effectiveness of a community-based diabetes self-management education (DSME) plus mobile health (mHealth)-enhanced peer support intervention to community-based DSME alone for African American adults with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes. This randomized controlled trial took place in Jefferson County, Alabama within a safety-net healthcare system with a group diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and hemoglobin A1C ≥ 7.5%. The intervention group reviewed community-based DSME plus 6 months of mHealth-enhanced peer support, including 12 weekly phone calls, then 3 monthly calls from community health workers. The control group received community based DSME only. Primary outcomes were lower A1C and secondary outcomes were lower diabetes distress, depressive symptoms, self-efficacy or confidence in their ability to manage diabetes, and social support. Of 120 participants selected, 97 completed the study. Both groups experienced clinical meaning reduction in A1C. Participants in the intervention group experienced a significantly larger reduction in diabetes distress compared to the control group.

Home blood pressure data visualization for the management of hypertension: designing for patient and physician information needs.
This study examined whether using home blood pressure visualization tools helps management of hypertension for both patients and physicians. A multidisciplinary team used iterative user-centered design to create a blood pressure visualization EHR prototype that included patient-generated blood pressure data. The study included an attitude and behavior survey and 10 focus groups with 16 patients and 24 physicians. Most patients measured their blood pressure at home, but only half shared data with their physician. Data visualization helped patients and physicians have a fuller understanding of the blood pressure “story” and helped with patient-physician interactions to better control hypertension.

Development of the incharge health mobile app to improve adherence to hydroxyurea in patients with sickle cell disease: user-centered design approach.
This study looked at how use of a newly developed mobile app called InCharge Health can help sickle cell disease (SCD) patients adhere to their prescribed medication use of hydroxyurea. Four phases were used to develop the mobile app with substantial input from users and by mapping the Health Belief Model (HBM) as the framework that guided the choice for its components. More than half of the patients reported potentially low health literacy. Preferred patient app features included 7 key components: medication reminders and tracker, disease education, communication, personalization, motivation, support during pain episodes, and social support. This information was translated into features within the app.

Effect of TELEmedicine for inflammatory bowel disease on patient activation and self-efficacy.
This study examined the use of a web-based monitoring system called TELEmedicine to remotely monitor changes in patient activation and self-efficacy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. This multicenter, randomized controlled trial enrolled 222 adults with IBD who had experienced an IBD flare within 2 years prior to the trial. Changes in self-efficacy were not significantly different between the two groups although patient activation scores were.

mHealth interventions for disadvantaged and vulnerable people with type 2 diabetes.
The authors evaluate the impact of diabetes self-management interventions delivered via mobile device and/or Internet on glycemic control of disadvantaged/vulnerable adults with type 2 diabetes. They found evidence suggesting that digital interventions can improve diabetes control, healthcare utilization, and healthcare costs. More research to substantiate these early findings is recommended; the authors suggest that many issues remain in order to optimize the impact of digital interventions on the health outcomes of disadvantaged/vulnerable persons with diabetes.

Use of the FITT framework to understand patients' experiences using a real-time medication monitoring pill bottle linked to a mobile-based HIV self-management app: a qualitative study.
This study examined the usefulness of a mobile app linked to a real-time medication monitoring pill bottle that reminds HIV patients to take their medication. Thirty-eight randomized patients living with HIV who were aged 18 and older, owned a smartphone and were mostly medication-compliant were selected. The majority were African-American, had a high school education or less, and had a median income of less than $20,000. The Fit between Individuals, Task and Technology (FITT) framework was used to determine the fit between the individuals and the technology. Hindrances to the technology included: ease of use, HIV-related stigma and disclosure of HIV status, customized alert of medication time windows, and preference for device design.

"It's not just technology, it's people": constructing a conceptual model of shared health informatics for tracking in chronic illness management.
To inform development of effective technologies that aid tracking of health indicators to support chronic illness management, this study aimed to construct a health informatics model that accurately describes the work and social context of that tracking work. The investigators concluded that the resulting CoMSHI yielded a more detailed and nuanced viewpoint of tracking in support of chronic illness management and could inform technology design to improve tracking tools to support people in more confident and capable chronic illness management.

Identifying and planning for individualized change: patient-provider collaboration using lightweight food diaries in healthy eating and irritable bowel syndrome.
This study examined if the use of a photo-based food diary app will help patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) help gather food and symptom data to help their doctors with disease management. The investigators designed and developed Foodprint which includes a mobile and web app and pre-visit note to go to experts which communicate an individual’s expectations and questions. A control group and a group with IBS were used to determine the effectiveness of Foodprint.

Comparison of functional benefits of self-management training for amputees under virtual world and e-learning conditions.
This project used a randomized design to compare two methods of disseminating an evidence-based self-management intervention for amputees, which included, avatar-based virtual world and e-learning environments. The investigators found that the virtual world group had a significantly higher dropout rate than the e-learning group.

Understanding the predisposing, enabling, and reinforcing factors influencing the use of a mobile-based HIV management app: a real-world usability evaluation.
In this study, the authors conducted an in-depth analysis of users' experiences using an HIV self-management app. Usability evaluation in a real-world setting enabled the investigators to measure users' actual experiences when interacting with the app during their everyday lives. They suggest that their work highlighted the importance of using mobile technology for persons living with HIV, specifically those with low income/housing instability.

Expanding the Facebook platform to engage and educate online communities.
This article discusses the development and use of a mobile application (app) called Liver Space that was developed through Facebook’s platform. This app is for the pediatric liver community including patients and caregivers. Unlike most Facebook health groups, this one is vetted by healthcare providers who are specialists. The app provides up-to-date information and includes emerging news, summaries from important scholarly journals and human interest stories. There is an “ask an expert” function incorporated into Liver Space. Also included in the app is the ability for users to track their labs and weight and to graph the data.

Daily and seasonal influences on dietary self-monitoring using a smartphone application.
Researchers examined within-person variation in dietary self-monitoring during a 6-month technology-supported weight loss trial as a function of time-varying factors including time in the study, day of the week, and month of the year. They found that participants recorded less as time in the study progressed. Fewer foods were reported on the weekends compared with weekdays. More foods were self-monitored in January compared with October; however, a seasonal effect was not observed.

Examining menstrual tracking to inform the design of personal informatics tools.
The researchers considered why and how women track their menstrual cycles, examining their experiences to extend the field's understanding of personal informatics tools. They found that women track their menstrual cycle for varied reasons that include remembering and predicting their period. Participants described six methods of tracking their menstrual cycles, including use of technology, awareness of their premenstrual physiological states, and simply remembering.

Tummytrials: a feasibility study of using self-experimentation to detect individualized food triggers.
The researchers designed, developed, and evaluated a mobile app that applies a self experimentation framework to support patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in identifying their personal food triggers. In examining the feasibility of this approach in a field study with 15 IBS patients, they found that participants could use the tool to reliably undergo a self-experiment.

When personal tracking becomes social: examining the use of Instagram for healthy eating.

Supporting patient-provider collaboration to identify individual triggers using food and symptom journals.
The researchers examined patient-provider collaboration to interpret patient-generated data. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) management often requires patient-provider collaboration using a patient's food and symptom journal to identify the patient's triggers. Drawing upon individual and collaborative interviews with patients and providers, the researchers found that collaborative review helps improve data comprehension and build mutual trust.

SafeHOME: promoting safe transitions to the home.
This paper introduces the SafeHome Simulator system, a set of immersive Virtual Reality Training tools and display systems to train patients in safe discharge procedures in captured environments of their actual houses. The aim is to lower patient readmission by significantly improving discharge planning and training. The SafeHOME Simulator is a project currently under review.
