Patients' lived experiences and recommendations for enhanced awareness and use of integrative oncology services in cancer care.
The purpose of this study was to involve patients in understanding improved clinic processes and digital health tools to support patient awareness and use of integrative oncology services. The patients were engaged in participatory design to explore their lived experiences as related to the utilization of integrative oncology services during and after conventional cancer treatment. The researchers held 10 design sessions with individual participants, which began with patient story telling regarding their path to and use of integrative oncology services. Feedback was then requested on the functionality of prototypes of mobile app screens intended to support patient symptom alleviation. The study found that oncology patients are active participants in the management of their symptoms and treatment side effects. Patients who used massage, yoga, and acupuncture reported a need for earlier patient education about those services. The study concluded that clinics can collaborate with patients to identify high priority needs, unmet needs and challenges, guide development of clinic process, and co-produce wellbeing in conventional cancer care.

Understanding the surgical experience for African-Americans and Caucasians with enhanced recovery.
The purpose of this study was to use qualitative methods to better understand the surgical experience for African-American and Caucasian patients in the setting of an enhanced recovery program (ERP). Findings showed that African-American and Caucasian surgical patients have varied surgical experiences even under an ERP. All patients, however, valued the ability to obtain, process, and understand health information during the surgical process. These elements define "health literacy" and suggest the importance of providing health literacy-sensitive care in surgery.

Patient perspectives on racial and ethnic implicit bias in clinical encounters: implications for curriculum development.
Patients describe feelings of bias and prejudice in clinical encounters; however, their perspectives on restoring the encounter, once bias is perceived, are not known. In order to inform the design of novel patient-centered curricular interventions, this study explored patients' perceptions of bias, and suggestions for restoring relationships if bias was perceived. The investigators concluded that participant lived experience and physician behaviors influence perceptions of bias, however clinical relationships can be restored following perceived bias.

Patients' experiences using a brief screening tool for medication-related problems in a community pharmacy setting.
The researchers explored patient perceptions and the practical implication of using a brief 9-item scale to screen for medication-related problems in community pharmacies. After interviewing 40 patients who completed the scale and reviewed its results with their pharmacist, they concluded that it may have value in increasing patients' understanding of and confidence in their medications, enhancing pharmacist-patient relationships, and identifying problems requiring additional interventions.

Exploring perceptions and use of the electronic health record by parents of children with autism spectrum disorder: a qualitative study.
This study used structured interviews with nine parents to examine perceptions of electronic health records and related patient portals in the treatment of their children. The authors recommend further research to increase portal registration and integration in patient care.

Effects of a DXA result letter on satisfaction, quality of life, and osteoporosis knowledge: a randomized controlled trial.
This study tested whether a tailored dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) test result letter and an accompanying educational bone-health brochure affected patient satisfaction, quality of life (QOL), or osteoporosis (OP) knowledge. It found that a tailored DXA result letter and bone-health educational brochure sent to patients improved patient satisfaction with bone-related health care. There were no differences between the intervention and usual care groups in QOL or OP knowledge.

Usability testing of two ambulatory EHR navigators.
Researchers sought to understand if redesigning an EHR-based navigation tool with clinician input improved user performance and satisfaction. A usability evaluation was conducted to compare two versions of a redesigned ambulatory navigator. The version of navigator did not affect perceived workload, and time to complete tasks was longer in the redesigned navigator. Preferences for EHR navigation structures appeared to be individualized.

Adult patients' perspectives on the benefits and harms of overused screening tests: a qualitative study.
This study determined how patients think about the harms and benefits of overused screening tests and how they consider these and other factors when making decisions. It found that many patients could not name a harm of screening. When they did name harms, patients often focused on only the harms of the screening test itself and rarely mentioned harms further along the screening cascade.
