Racial and ethnic disparities in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease prevalence, severity, and outcomes in the United States: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease in the United States, affecting 75-100 million Americans. However, the disease burden may not be equally distributed among races or ethnicities. In this study, the investigators conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to characterize racial and ethnic disparities in NAFLD prevalence, severity, and prognosis.

Study design and protocol for My Guide: an e-health intervention to improve patient-centered outcomes among Hispanic breast cancer survivors.
This article describes a randomized controlled trial designed to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of a Smartphone application intended to improve health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among Hispanic breast cancer survivors. Participants are randomized to receive either the intervention application My Guide, or the health education control condition application My Health for six weeks, and also receive weekly telecoaching to enhance adherence to both applications. The study's outcomes are measured prior to intervention, immediately after, and eight weeks following initial application use.

The impact of hospital volume on racial differences in complications, readmissions, and emergency department visits following total joint arthroplasty.
This study evaluates the impact of hospital volume on racial differences in outcomes following joint replacement. The study authors concluded that adjusting for hospital volume does not alter the risk of readmissions and ED use associated with minority race/ethnicity, suggesting that hospital volume alone may be insufficient to explain racial differences in outcome.

State variation in quality outcomes and disparities in outcomes in community health centers.
The researchers estimated between-state variation in hypertension, diabetes, and pregnancy outcomes and racial/ethnic disparities in these outcomes for health center patients. They found wide variation in both outcomes and racial/ethnic disparities in outcomes between states for patients seen at health centers..

Racial and socioeconomic differences manifest in process measure adherence for enhanced recovery after surgery pathway.
This study aims to demonstrate the association between recovery pathway implementation, process measures, and short-term surgical outcomes by population subgroup. It concluded that differences in outcomes by race and socioeconomic status did not arise following implementation of an enhanced recovery pathway. Differences in process measures by population subgroups highlight differences in care that require further investigation.

Racial and ethnic differences in heart failure readmissions and mortality in a large municipal healthcare system.
This study sought to determine whether racial and ethnic differences exist among patients with similar access to care. It examined outcomes after heart failure hospitalization within a large municipal health system and determined that racial and ethnic differences in outcomes were present.

Amputation rates for patients with diabetes and peripheral arterial disease: the effects of race and region.
The authors examined national trends in care of patients with both peripheral artery disease (PAD) and diabetes. They found that the prevalence of concurrent PAD and diabetes is increasing, but amputation rates and amputation-free survival vary significantly by both race and hospital referral region.

Outcomes with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors vs other antihypertensive agents in hypertensive blacks.
The study’s objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors when compared with other antihypertensive agents in hypertensive blacks. It found that in a large cohort of hypertensive blacks, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors were associated with less benefit when compared with calcium channel blockers or thiazide diuretics.

Maternal risk factors and perinatal outcomes among pacific islander groups in Hawaii: a retrospective cohort study using statewide hospital data.
This study compared perinatal outcomes between Pacific Islander and White women who delivered a singleton liveborn in any Hawaii hospital from January 2010 to December 2011. Significant differences in perinatal outcomes between Pacific Islander and White women and newborns were noted. All Pacific Islander groups had an increased risk of hypertension. Native Hawaiians had the highest risk of low birthweight infants.

Racial and gender differences in stroke severity, outcomes, and treatment in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
This study sought to determine the association of race and gender on initial stroke severity, thrombolysis, and functional outcome after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). The investigators concluded that race and gender were not significantly associated with short-term outcome, although black women were significantly less likely to be treated with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). Black women had more tPA exclusions than any other group. The primary reason for tPA exclusion in this study was not arriving within 3 hours of stroke symptom onset.
