Missed care relates to nurse job enjoyment and intention to leave in neonatal intensive care.
Being unable to provide required nursing care to infants could contribute to poorer neonatal nurse job outcomes, which may exacerbate staffing challenges. Little evidence exists about how missed nursing care relates to neonatal nurse job outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine relationships among missed nursing care, job enjoyment and intention to leave for neonatal nurses.

Information flow during pediatric trauma care transitions: things falling through the cracks.
In order to investigate information flow during pediatric trauma care transitions, researchers interviewed 18 clinicians about communication and coordination between the emergency department, operating room, and pediatric intensive care unit, then surveyed the clinicians about patient safety during these transitions. They found that, despite the fact that the many services and units involved in pediatric trauma cooperate well together during trauma cases, important patient care information is often lost when transitioning patients between units. To manage the transition of this fragile and complex population better, they recommend finding ways to manage the information flow during these transitions better by, for instance, providing technological support to ensure shared mental models.

Impact of passive laboratory alerts on navigating electronic health records in intensive care simulations. Sage Open 2018 Apr/Jun;8(2).
This study examined whether the use of passive alerts highlighting abnormal results in electronic health records (EHRs) contribute to alert fatigue among clinicians. Researchers employed eye tracking during chart review. Passive alerts were associated with reduced gaze fixations. However, the alerts had no impact on the duration of physician trainees reviewing laboratory results and charts or identification of patient safety issues.

How do residents spend their time in the intensive care unit?
The researchers described the work of residents and the distribution of their time in 6 intensive care units (ICUs) of 2 medical centers (MCs). The found that residents spent most time performing direct patient care and care coordination activities. The distribution of activities, which varied across MCs and across ICUs, highlights the need to consider the local context on residents' work in ICUs.
