Excess 30-day heart failure readmissions and mortality in black patients increases with neighborhood deprivation.
Researchers examined whether neighborhood environment modifies the disparity in 30-day heart failure (HF) readmissions and mortality between Black and White patients in the Southeastern United States. They created a geocoded retrospective cohort of patients hospitalized for acute HF from 2010-2018 within Emory Healthcare. They found that excess 30-day HF readmissions and mortality were present among Black patients in every neighborhood strata and increased with progressive neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation.

Neighborhood deprivation predicts heart failure risk in a low-income population of blacks and whites in the southeastern United States.
The researchers investigated whether neighborhood deprivation predicts risk of incident heart failure (HF) beyond individual socioeconomic status in a low-income population. They concluded that, in a low-income population from the Southern Community Cohort Study, scant neighborhood resources compounded the risk of HF above and beyond individual socioeconomic status and traditional cardiovascular risk factors.

Geographic variation in trends and disparities in acute myocardial infarction hospitalization and mortality by income levels, 1999-2013.
The researchers sought to determine whether trends in US county-level, risk-standardized acute myocardial infarction (AMI) hospitalization and mortality rates varied by county-based median income level. They concluded that hospitalization and mortality rates of AMI declined among counties of all income levels, although hospitalization rates among low-income counties lag behind those of the higher income groups.

Evaluating the initiation of novel oral anticoagulants in Medicare beneficiaries.
This study evaluated how patient demographics, clinical characteristics, types of insurance, and patient out-of-pocket spending affect the initiation of warfarin and 2 novel oral anticoagulants (NOACs)--dabigatran and rivaroxaban. It found that race, sex, type of Part D plans, and some clinical conditions were associated with the initiation of NOACs relative to warfarin.

Potentially preventable hospitalizations for congestive heart failure among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Hawai'i.
The authors studied congestive heart failure (CHF) hospitalizations among racial groups. They found that high preventable CHF hospitalization rates are seen in some Asian and Pacific Islander groups, especially Native Hawaiians and Filipinos, who have these hospitalizations at younger ages than other studied groups.

Association between divorce and risks for acute myocardial infarction.
This study investigated the association between lifetime exposure to divorce and the incidence of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in US adults. Divorce is a significant risk factor for AMI. It found that the risks associated with multiple divorces are especially high in women and are not reduced with remarriage.

Utility of socioeconomic status in predicting 30-day outcomes after heart failure hospitalization.
The researchers investigated whether accounting for socioeconomic status (SES) can improve risk-adjusted models for 30-day outcomes among CMS beneficiaries hospitalized with heart failure. They found that county-level SES data are modestly associated with 30-day outcomes but do not improve risk adjustment models based on patient characteristics alone.

Factors affecting medication adherence trajectories for patients with heart failure.
The researchers examined the relationship between patient characteristics and medication adherence trajectories for patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). They found that age, region, education, smoking, and race were all significantly associated with the likelihood of belonging to a particular trajectory (low, increasing, decreasing, and high adherence). Nonwhites were less likely to be in the high adherence group, and smoking was more common in the low adherence group (22 percent) than in the high group (10 percent).
