High-intensity telemedicine decreases emergency department use by senior living community residents.
The authors evaluated the effect on emergency departrment use of a high-intensity telemedicine program that provides acute illness care for senior living community (SLC) residents. They found that high-intensity telemedicine significantly reduced emergency department use among SLC residents without increasing other utilization or mortality.

Accuracy of self-reported health care use in a population-based sample of homeless adults.
The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of self-reported ambulatory care visits, emergency department (ED) encounters, and overnight hospitalizations in a population-based sample of homeless adults.It found that adults experiencing homelessness are quite accurate reporters of their use of health care, especially for ED encounters and hospitalizations.

High-intensity telemedicine decreases emergency department use for ambulatory care sensitive conditions by older adult senior living community residents.
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a high-intensity telemedicine program for senior living community (SLC) residents on the rate of Emergency department (ED) visits for ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSCs). It found that providing acute illness care by high-intensity telemedicine to older adults residing in SLCs significantly decreases the rate of ED use for ACSCs over 1 year.

Funding research in emergency diagnostic imaging: summary of a panel discussion at the 2015 Academic Emergency Medicine Consensus Conference.
As part of the 2015 Academic Emergency Medicine consensus conference "Diagnostic Imaging in the Emergency Department: A Research Agenda to Optimize Utilization," a panel of representatives from several Federal agencies and organizations including AHRQ was assembled to discuss future opportunities for funding research in this particular area of interest. Representatives from these agencies and organizations discussed their missions and priorities and how they distribute funding.

Research priorities in the utilization and interpretation of diagnostic imaging: Education, assessment, and competency.
A group of radiologists, physicists, and emergency physicians convened at the 2015 Academic Emergency Medicine consensus conference to discuss and prioritize a research agenda related to education, assessment, and competency in ordering and interpreting diagnostic imaging. In this article, the authors review the supporting reliability and validity evidence and make specific recommendations for future research on the education, competency, and assessment of learning diagnostic imaging.

Connecting emergency department patients to primary care.
The researchers developed and evaluated a system change innovation designed to remove system barriers to primary care access for Medicaid patients. The intervention did not decrease ED visits nor increase primary care use over the 12 months of the study period. The qualitative results provide insight into nonurgent ED utilization by patients with Medicaid, suggesting potential future interventions.

When do patient-reported outcome measures inform readmission risk?
The study sought was to characterize changes in patient-reported outcome measures from hospital discharge to assess when they best inform risk of utilization as defined by readmissions or emergency department use. It concluded that routine measurement of patient-reported outcomes can help identify patients at higher risk for utilizations. For example, in-hospital assessments revealing high symptom burden and poor health status predicted 14-day reutilization.

Comparative effectiveness of injectable paliperidone palmitate versus oral atypical antipsychotics: early postmarketing evidence.
The researchers compared the likelihood of hospitalization and emergency department visits in Medicaid patients from the state of Missouri starting paliperidone palmitate versus oral atypical (also known as second-generation) antipsychotics. They found that paliperidone palmitate treatment resulted in a statistically significant 37 percent reduction in the adjusted likelihood of an all-cause emergency department visit. There was no statistically significant reduction in hospitalization.

Patients who use multiple EDs: quantifying the degree of overlap between ED populations.
The researchers estimated the proportion of emergency department (ED) patients who seek care from more than one ED by using a sample of three EDs in a region with a total of 18 EDs and one dedicated pediatric ED. They found that most repeat encounters occur within a single ED rather than among multiple EDs. Nonetheless, nearly one of every four ED encounters were by patients who also visited another ED during the study period.

Impact of subsidized health insurance coverage on emergency department utilization by low-income adults in Massachusetts.
The authors aimed to estimate the change in emergency department (ED) utilization per individual among a cohort who qualified for subsidized health insurance following the Massachusetts health care reform. They concluded that expanding subsidized health insurance did not uniformly change ED utilization for all newly insured low-income adults in Massachusetts.

Is low health literacy associated with increased emergency department utilization and recidivism?
The study objective was to determine whether patients with low health literacy have higher emergency department (ED) use and higher ED recidivism than patients with adequate health literacy. It found that patients with inadequate health literacy had higher ED use compared to those with adequate health literacy.

A comprehensive assessment of health care utilization among homeless adults under a system of universal health insurance.
The researchers comprehensively assessed health care utilization in a population-based sample of homeless adults and matched controls under a universal health insurance system. They found that homeless people had substantially higher rates of ED and hospital use than general population controls; these rates were largely driven by a subset of homeless persons with extremely high-intensity usage of health services.

Health information exchange improves identification of frequent emergency department users.
The goal of the project was to measure the incremental increase in the number of frequent ED users who were identified when data
from all EDs participating in an health information exchange were compared with site-specific data. When the researchers analyzed HIE-wide data instead of site-specific data, they identified 20.3 percent more frequent ED users and 16.0 percent more visits by them to the ED.

High utilizers of emergency health services in a population-based cohort of homeless adults.
This study identified predictors of frequent emergency department (ED) use among a population-based sample of homeless adults in Toronto, Ontario. It found that among homeless adults with universal health insurance, a small subgroup accounted for the majority of visits to emergency services. Frequent use was driven by multiple predisposing, enabling, and need factors.
