Develop and Improve Your Stewardship Program
For information on how the materials below can be integrated into institutional efforts to improve antibiotic use, please read the Toolkit Implementation Guide for Acute Care Antibiotic Stewardship Programs (PDF, 328 KB).
A resourced and functional antibiotic stewardship program (ASP) is central to the AHRQ Safety Program for Improving Antibiotic Use. These presentations can help you develop a program from scratch or improve the effectiveness of your existing program. Slides and a facilitator guide are available for the first four presentations listed below. The presentations about integration of the bedside nurse and the microbiology lab into the stewardship program are narrated presentations that you can view and listen to.
The tools below are designed to complement your ASP development work. The gap analysis should be completed by all ASPs to ensure that all essential components are present. Guideline development is essential for all ASPs, and approach and suggested content are available via the One Page Documents. All ASPs should be making daily interventions to improve antibiotic use; the Team Antibiotic Review Form can facilitate post-prescription review and feedback including via in-person meetings with frontline teams.
