HCUP Visualization of Inpatient Trends in COVID-19 and Other Conditions
This interactive visualization displays State-specific monthly trends in inpatient stays related to COVID-19 and other conditions and facilitates comparisons across patient/stay characteristics and States. Trends are reported beginning with January 2018 except for COVID-19, where trends are reported beginning with April 2020. This information is derived from the HCUP Summary Trend Tables, which present monthly information on hospital utilization based on the 2018–2019 HCUP State Inpatient Databases (SID) for 46 States and the District of Columbia, plus 2020 quarterly inpatient data, if available. HCUP brings together the data collection efforts of the HCUP Data Partners. Definitions, a description of the methods, and the full underlying dataset (XLSX, 9.0 MB) are available in Microsoft® Excel format.
Instructions for use:
- Select 1 of the 3 top buttons to indicate how you want to compare monthly trends: across COVID-19 and other conditions, across States, or across patient/stay characteristics.
- Select 1 of the 3 outcome buttons: number of discharges, in-hospital mortality rate, or average length of stay.
- Use the drop-down menus to examine variation within each selection. Note that States with COVID-19 data are marked with an asterisk (*).
- The display is blank when data are unavailable.
