How To Use the ESRD Toolkit

ESRD Toolkit

The toolkit consists of four instructional modules that a facilitator can use to teach dialysis center team members specific ways to create a culture of safety. The modules are modifiable to meet individual dialysis center training needs.

Modules of the ESRD Toolkit contain some or all of the following materials:

Slides (PowerPoint): The slides explain the main ideas of each module and can be viewed by one person on a computer or shown by a facilitator during a group presentation. The slides should be shown in slide show view so links to videos work correctly. Left-click on the slide’s video screen or select it to start the video. Users are free to customize the slides to meet their team’s needs.

Facilitator notes (Word): The facilitator notes serve as a proposed script to accompany the slides. Prompts (SAY, DO, ASK) lead the facilitator through each slide’s content. Facilitators can read directly from the facilitator notes or customize them to fit their team’s needs.

Videos (Flash): Videos provide instruction on proper clinical care and present hypothetical situations to teach good and bad approaches to creating a culture of safety. Some videos are linked from the module slides, which should be shown in slide show view so the links work correctly. The facilitator notes contain questions about the videos to promote discussion among the team members. The Web site contains full and excerpted versions of the videos. Videos can also be downloaded for use without an Internet connection from here.

Tools (PDF and Word): Tools consist of checklists and information sheets. The checklists are presented in two formats: PDF that allows users to check boxes digitally, and Word. The information sheets are Word documents. Tools can be modified to fit a team’s needs.

Modules can be used in whatever order the user wishes.

Links to these products are located on the pages for each module, accessible through the ESRD Toolkit Modules page.
